Guides – everything you need to get up and running with Apollo

Installing^

  1. Goto http://www.dalsoft.co.uk/apollo/builds/ Click on the install button.

  2. Click on the Install button on the following security message.
  3. Security Message

  4. Say yes to any firewall messages that appear during the installation (see Internet Access).
  5. Say yes to the message below (see adding users), if you intend to stream over the internet (see Internet Access). If you only want to stream over your wireless network say no.

Testing Locally^

  1. You should have seen this message in the notification bar. Depending on how big your Windows Media Library is this may take some time

  2. Test that you can open Apollo locally. You can do this by right clicking on the Apollo icon in the notification bar and selecting Open Apollo Locally or double clicking on the Apollo icon and clicking on the local IP address link

Using Apollo^

Now you can verify you can use Apollo locally the next stage is to open from your chosen device; over your wireless network or the internet.

  1. To do this open the Apollo Control Center by either right clicking on the Apollo icon and selecting Open Apollo Control Center or double clicking on the Apollo Icon.

  2. Once the Apollo Control Centre is open make a note of the local IP if you want to stream wirelessly or the Internet IP if you want to stream over the internet (see Internet Access).

  3. Now you have the IP address you need just type it in the browser of your chosen device. This is different for each device so pick your device from the list below.
  4. Once you have typed the IP address into your browser you will see a page simliar to below. If you typed in your Internet IP you will need to provide the username and password you set up to access Apollo securely (see Adding Users).Apollo Page
  5. To search simply enter the search in the textbox and click on search. Optionally select one of the filters Music, Photos, Playlists, Albums, Artists or Genre. Apollo Page Toolbar
  6. Use the pager at the bottom to page through your results.

  7. Click on Add to add music to your playlist.

  8. Using the Control Panel (you may need to click on the Control Panel link) click Remove to remove music from your playlist.
  9. Using the Control Panel click on the Clear button to remove all music from your playlist.

  10. Using the Control Panel name your playlist in the textbox provided and click on the Save button. This saves your Windows playlist to the PC Apollo is installed on and allows it to be used on Apollo over your wireless network or the internet.

  11. Using the Control Panel click on the Stream button to Stream your playlist to you device. What happens next is different on each device so pick your device from the list below.

  12. Use the Preferences link to change preferences such as the Skin Apollo uses.

Using Apollo – PSP^

Use Apollo to stream music to your Playstation Portable PSP.

  1. Set up wireless on your PSP – detailed instuctions at http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PSP/ConnectingToInternet/.
  2. Open up the web browser and type in your local IP if streaming wirelessly or your internet IP if streaming over the internet (see Using Apollo). Detailed PSP browser instuctions at http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PSP/WebBrowser/.
  3. Use Apollo as described in Using Apollo.
  4. When you click on Stream (see Using Apollo) the PSP will ask you to save your playlist as a RSS podcast say yes.
  5. You can now stream, play and save your playlist using the RSS feed saved on your PSP. Detailed PSP instuctions at http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PSP/RSS/s_psp_rs_mu.html.

Using Apollo – PC^

Use Apollo to stream music to your PC wirelessly or over the internet.

  1. Open up Internet Explorer and type in your local IP or internet IP (see Using Apollo).
  2. Use Apollo as described in Using Apollo.
  3. When you click on Stream (see Using Apollo). Your playlist will open in Windows Media Player ready to stream or save.

Using Apollo – PPC^

Use Apollo to stream music to your PPC Pocket PC. Please note PPC support over the internet is experimental at the moment (wireless network is fine). To use over the internet on PPC you will need to turn off Apollo internet security (see Advanced Settings) this is not supported or recommended and should only be changed to test the beta. The very next release will fix this.

  1. Windows Media Player doesn’t support HTTP streaming from Apollo. So we need to download a alternative media player. Apollo is Tested on the following open source/free media players:
  2. Set up wireless or 3G as required on your PPC.
  3. Open up Internet Explorer and type in your local IP or internet IP (see Using Apollo).
  4. Use Apollo as described in Using Apollo.
  5. When you click on stream (see Using Apollo). Your playlist will open in TCPMP ready to stream or save.

Using Apollo – Windows Smartphone^

Use Apollo to stream music to your Smartphone. Please note Smartphone support over the internet is experimental at the moment (wireless network is fine). To use over the internet on Smartphone you will need to turn off Apollo internet security (see Advanced Settings) this is not supported or recommended and should only be changed to test the beta. The very next release will fix this.

Internet Access^

One of the advantages of using Apollo is that you can stream music over the internet.

  1. First you need to make a note of the local IP and Internet IP Apollo is running on.To do this open the Apollo Control Center by either right clicking on the Apollo icon and selecting Open Apollo Control Center or double clicking on the Apollo Icon. Once the Apollo Control Center is open make a note of the local IP and internet IP.

  2. It is recommended that you use a static IP (see static IP).
  3. On your personal firewall open up port 80 to the internet. Open ports manually when using Windows Firewall.
  4. Using the information from step 1 setup your router to forward port 80 to Apollo over the internet. portforward.com has detailed instructions on how to do this.
  5. If you haven’t already, create a user for accessing Apollo securely over the internet (see Adding Users).
  6. Once configured just type into your device’s browser your Internet IP (discovered in step 1). This is different for each device, so pick your device from the list below.

Adding Users^

When using Apollo over the internet, you need to add a user that you will use to access Apollo securely.

  1. Open the Apollo Control Center by either right clicking on the Apollo icon and selecting Open Apollo Control Center or double clicking on the Apollo Icon.

  2. Click on the Users tab.
  3. Click on the Manage Users link.

  4. Provide the username and password in the textbox provided, then click on the Add User link.

Advanced Settings^

Guru’s only! Only mess around with these settings if you know what you are doing.

  1. Open the Apollo Control Center by either right clicking on the Apollo icon and selecting Open Apollo Control Center or double clicking on the Apollo Icon.Open Apollo Control Center OR

  2. Click on the Settings tab.

  3. You may change the internet and local network settings to be secure or insecure. Secure means you need a username and password to access Apollo. Insecure is not recommended for internet access (anyone will be able to stream your music or create playlists).
  4. You can also change the port Apollo runs on. You might want to do this if you have another application running on port 80.

Static IP^

It is recommended that you use a static IP with Apollo (especially when using Apollo over the internet) Detail instructions at http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm.

Troubleshooting^

You might encounter the following problems.

  1. You may get the following error message:
    Firewall error

    Resolution 1: Refer to your PC’s firewall documenation to let Apollo out to the internet and to listen on port 80. Resolution 2: Ensure your PC has access to the internet.

  2. You may get the following error message:
    Firewall error
    Resolution 1: Another program or process is using port 80 either change the port Apollo is using (see advanced settings ) or remove the program or process using port 80. Resolution 2: It has also been reported that this happens every so offen, if this is the case a restart will fix the issue.
  3. You see the following message when using Apollo:
    No Media
    Resolution 1: Your search returned no results.Resolution 2: You need to create your windows media library. Detailed instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/howto/organize_how_to.aspx.

Uses for Apollo^

Apollo has many uses here are 10 of them.

  1. Managing your media libaray in one place, no more synchronizing to individual devices.
  2. Streaming your music to your PSP at home over your wireless network or on the move over the internet.
  3. Streaming from your PC at home to your PC at work.
  4. Easily search and filter your media by Music, Photos, Playlists, Albums, Artists or Genre.
  5. Easily convert your Windows Media Playlist .wpl format to the open playlist .pls format.
  6. Stream music over 3G to your Windows Smartphone or Pocket PC.
  7. Share your photo collection that is on you PC with friends and loved ones.
  8. No need to pay for storage (or have limited free storage) and the hassle of copying your photos to a internet company.
  9. Stream your music all over your house.
  10. Only share your photos with people you want to.
